It offers better lighting, cleaner backgrounds, and far more room for natural interactions.

We always recommend setting aside 10–15 minutes for nighttime photos (in addition to earlier portraits) because the evening ambiance adds cinematic dimension to your final gallery.

Golden Hour
Approximately two to three hours before sunset, the outdoor venue lighting begins to soften beautifully. This is the ideal window for couple’s portraits, family groupings, and artistic imagery.
Midday Sun
Earlier in the day, the bright and direct sun creates strong shadows and harsh contrast that are not ideal for large group portraits. At Shiloh Gardens, there is no shaded area wide enough to evenly cover an entire wedding party or extended family during midday conditions. Lighting a group of that size outdoors would require a full production team and extensive equipment, which is not standard for most weddings in the industry and is far beyond what is typically practical or necessary for a wedding day.
For this reason, we do not recommend planning large group portraits outdoors in midday sun. Small groups of one to two people, or sometimes one to three, are manageable when our assistant photographer is available to help with lighting. However, midday outdoor portraits in general become much more challenging and are not recommended when there are better times of day available with more flattering natural light.
Overcast Weather
Cloudy days create soft, even lighting throughout the property, an ideal scenario for portraits anywhere on the grounds.
Lighting Nuances in the Reception Space
During the day, large windows fill the event center with natural light. Because the room is so large, an evening reception can feel cavernous without extra lighting, so uplighting is worth planning for a nighttime reception. It warms the walls, makes the space feel more intimate, and helps florals, centerpieces and the cake stand out in photos.
During indoor daytime receptions at Shiloh Gardens, we’ve encountered a lighting characteristic that is common in spaces that combine natural light with certain types of overhead fixtures. Some fluorescent and budget-friendly LED bulbs emit light in rapid pulses rather than a fully continuous beam.
To the naked eye, the room looks stable and evenly lit. To a camera photographing at fast shutter speeds (which is necessary to freeze motion on the dance floor) these micro-cycles may appear as slight variations in color or brightness from frame to frame.

This type of lighting behavior is something we monitor closely and adjust for immediately. Our approach includes:
Assessing which fixtures cycle visibly on camera
Adjusting exposure to control ambient influence

The house was built in 1906 by the owner of the Wheeler lumber yard, and the floors, walls, ceilings and two-story wrap-around porches are all heart pine. After a full restoration, the venue hosted its first wedding in 2011, and the barn followed in 2012. The whole property feels well thought out and nicely decorated, and every space is made for weddings.
The venue offers all-inclusive packages as well as micro wedding options, and it also rents three restored cottages nearby for overnight stays. Packages and inclusions change over time, so the Wheeler House investment page is the best place to check current details.
Getting Ready Photos at The Wheeler House
The bridal suite is one of the prettiest getting ready spaces we have worked in. It is decorated with wicker furnishings and charming southern style details, and the large claw foot tub is original to the house, which adds a lovely touch of history to detail photos and bridal portraits.
The groom and groomsmen get ready in their own climate-controlled suite in the barn, with plenty of room for changing and storing personal items. Guests can also enjoy the billiards room inside the house, and it makes for a great photo op with the guys before the ceremony.
The wrap-around porches are another favorite. There is room for a bridesmaid reveal in soft, even light, and the front of the house makes a classic backdrop for wedding party photos.
Ceremony Photos Under the Arbor
The outdoor ceremony space is beautiful. Couples can marry outside under the venue’s draped arbor with chandeliers, surrounded by trees, and the barn is also available for an indoor ceremony. Both options photograph well, and the outdoor setting gives us natural light and a leafy green backdrop for the vows, the ring exchange and the first moments as a married couple.
The Barn at The Wheeler House
The barn is one of our favorite parts of the property. It was custom built in 2012 as an event space, designed to have the romantic feel of a barn, and it has never been a working barn. The venue built it with reclaimed timbers, and it has central heat and air, so it stays comfortable in any season.
Inside, crystal chandeliers, draped fabric and warm wood beams give reception photos a soft, glowing look. The dance floor layout can be customized to your floor plan with help from the venue’s in-house coordinators, and the barn was planned to complement the historic home and the old oak trees around it.
Reception Photos: Cake Cutting and Dancing
With the dance floor at the center of the barn, it is easy to capture the cake cutting, toasts and a packed dance floor with the chandeliers and draping in the background.
Night Portraits and the Send-Off
After dark, the string lights over the brick path and the lit porches give the house a warm glow. A few minutes away from the reception is all it takes to round out the Wheeler House photos with portraits in front of the house in that evening light.

After wrapping up at the Federal Reserve, the guys started to head back to the Peachtree Club as well! Along the way, we stopped by the 999 Peachtree sign! An absolute must if you’re having your wedding at the Peachtree Club!
We arrived to the 28th floor to begin photographing all of the gorgeous ceremony & reception decor before the guests started to arrive! The bride & groom were tucked safely away in their respective suites.

There were so many tender, heartfelt moments between these two during their ceremony! As a wedding photographer, it’s really hard not to tear up sometimes as we see all of these incredible moments unfolding.
After the ceremony wrapped up, we went to the Book Room with the bride & groom to get a couple of more indoor portraits of the two of them.
