Where to Get Married at the Courthouse in Metro Atlanta
In metro Atlanta, getting married at the courthouse usually involves two steps: the county probate court issues your marriage license, and a judge or magistrate performs the ceremony, sometimes in a different court or building. Here’s how it works in the four counties couples ask us about most, plus the historic courthouses nearby that make beautiful portrait backdrops.
Fulton County Courthouse
Fulton County marriage licenses come from the Probate Court at 136 Pryor Street SW in downtown Atlanta. Fulton County has hosted free ceremony events, and Magistrate Court weddings require advance Rule 11 approval before an outside photographer can attend, so send that request well ahead of your date. DeKalb County marriage licenses come from the Probate Court in the Judicial Tower at 556 N. McDonough Street in Decatur. The process is appointment-only, including entry to the building, and DeKalb has announced special ceremony events in place of a standing year-round ceremony service.
The Historic DeKalb Courthouse on the Decatur Square is a separate building from the Probate Court, and one of our favorite spots for portraits before or after the ceremony.
Cobb County marriage licenses come from the Probate Court at 32 Waddell Street in Marietta. Ceremonies are performed separately by the Magistrate Court, which holds free group ceremonies in Building D at the same address: Monday through Thursday at 6:00 PM, and Friday through Sunday at noon and 6:00 PM. If you’re getting your license on the day of a weekday ceremony, arrive at the Probate Court licensing office by 4:30 PM.

In Gwinnett County, licenses and ceremonies are both handled at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. Probate Court ceremonies are held most Friday afternoons by reservation only, and both of you need your Georgia marriage license and photo ID at check-in.

A courthouse wedding in metro Atlanta can cost as little as the marriage license. Each county probate court sets its own fee, so the price of getting married at the courthouse depends on where you apply. It’s $56 in Cobb and Gwinnett counties and $66 in DeKalb County, or $16 to $26 if you complete a qualifying premarital education course. Several metro Atlanta courts, including Cobb and Fulton, also offer free courthouse ceremonies on set days, so the legal side of the day often comes to less than $100.

From there, the total is up to you. Outfits, rings, flowers, a celebration dinner and photography are the choices that move the number. Fees and ceremony schedules change, so check the website of the probate court where you’ll get your license before you go.
If you’d like professional photos, plan for at least two hours. Courthouse ceremonies always start at 2 hours of coverage. Courthouses run on their own schedule, and it’s common to wait well past your appointment time. Two hours means we’re there for the whole experience, from the nervous wait to the ceremony to your first portraits as a married couple, without anyone watching the clock or needing to add time on the day. How to Get Married in Georgia Without a Traditional Wedding Ceremony
You do not need to plan a large or traditional wedding ceremony to get legally married in Georgia. However, obtaining a marriage license by itself does not complete the marriage. The license authorizes the marriage, but it must still be signed following a legal ceremony or solemnization and returned to the Probate Court.
For couples who want the simplest possible process, the steps generally include:
Apply for a Marriage License: Both partners must appear before a Georgia Probate Court and provide the required identification and documentation. If at least one partner is a Georgia resident, the couple may apply in any Georgia county. If neither partner is a Georgia resident, the license must be issued by the county where the ceremony will take place.
Choose How to Complete the Marriage: You may have a brief courthouse ceremony, work with an authorized officiant, or plan a simple private ceremony. It does not need to resemble a traditional wedding, but the marriage must be legally solemnized.
Complete the Ceremony: The authorized person performing the marriage completes and signs the marriage license after the ceremony.
Return the Signed License: The signed marriage license should be returned to the issuing Probate Court within 30 days of the ceremony.
Obtain the Marriage Certificate: After the Probate Court records the completed license, the couple can receive or request a certified marriage certificate documenting the legal marriage.

How Many People Can Attend a Courthouse Wedding?
It depends on the court. Fulton County’s free ceremony events have listed limits of 2 to 6 guests, while Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett and most other metro Atlanta courts don’t publish a guest limit. What Do You Need for a Courthouse Wedding?
You need a Georgia marriage license. Both of you apply in person at a county probate court with valid photo ID, plus proof that any previous marriage has ended. Some courts also require a ceremony reservation (Gwinnett is reservation-only), and Fulton County’s Magistrate Court requires advance Rule 11 approval to bring an outside photographer. How to Get Married at the Marietta Courthouse
The Marietta Courthouse, also called the Cobb County Courthouse, sits right on Marietta Square, so you can say your vows and step outside for portraits in minutes. Start with your marriage license from the Cobb County Probate Court at 32 Waddell Street in Marietta. The license is $56, or $16 if you complete a premarital education program, and certified copies are $10 each.

2. The Marietta Mural at Marietta Square
The Marietta Courthouse is also right next to the giant Marietta Mural on Marietta Square! If you love an urban vibe for photos, love vibrant colors, or your first or last name begins with any of the letters – M, A, R, I, E, T, T, or A, you’ll love this! This particular spot it also right next to the train tracks that run through the square.
In addition to this mural, there are also several other great murals nearby!
3. The Gazebo!
This gazebo, located in the middle of the square, is perhaps one of the most often requested locations in a Marietta Courthouse photo session. If you happen to schedule your photo session on a weekend, it’s not uncommon to have to wait in line to take portraits in this spot! Because of this, we HIGHLY recommend scheduling a weekday session whenever you can! You’ll experience less wait times (or no wait times) and a much lesser crowded Marietta Square.

Bringing a Photographer to Fulton County Magistrate Court
Couples arranging a wedding through the Magistrate Court of Fulton County must request advance approval before bringing a photographer or recording equipment into the courtroom. Complete and submit the Rule 11 Order form early enough to allow time for the judge’s review and signature.
The Rule 11 form instructs photographers to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Photography and filming are limited to the couple’s assigned ceremony, equipment placement is subject to approval by the Sheriff’s or Marshal’s office, and livestreaming is not permitted.
These requirements apply specifically to weddings arranged through the Magistrate Court. Other Fulton County courts, locations, or special ceremony programs may have different procedures.

Pickens County Probate Court issues marriage licenses, but it does not perform wedding ceremonies. Couples who obtain their license in Jasper must arrange a separate ceremony with a qualified officiant.

How to Get a Marriage License in Pickens County
Marriage licenses are issued by Pickens County Probate Court at:

Marriage-license applications are accepted on normal business days between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Both applicants must present photo identification and proof of age. Accepted proof-of-age documents include a certified birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, or military identification.
If either applicant was previously married, the court requires proof that the most recent marriage ended. Depending on the circumstances, this may be a filed final divorce decree or a certified death certificate. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.
Georgia residents may apply for a marriage license in any Georgia county. If neither applicant is a Georgia resident, the license must be obtained in the county where the ceremony will take place. According to Pickens County’s official information, the license does not expire.
Pickens County Marriage-License Fees
The standard marriage-license fee is $76.
Couples who have completed at least six hours of qualifying premarital education may receive the reduced $36 fee. The counselor must complete the certificate provided by the Probate Court.

Processing fees apply to card payments. Certified copies of a recorded marriage license are available separately for $10.
Does Pickens County Probate Court Perform Weddings?
No. Pickens County’s official court website states that the Probate Court does not perform wedding ceremonies.
The Probate Court issues the marriage license, but couples are responsible for arranging a private ceremony with a qualified officiant. Your paperwork and ceremony may therefore happen in two different places.
This distinction is important when planning photography. Rather than expecting an in-court ceremony, couples can design a short private ceremony at another location and schedule wedding portraits before or afterward.
Are Marriage-License Appointments Required?
The official Pickens County website states that marriage-license applications are accepted on normal business days between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. It does not publicly state that an appointment is required, but it also does not explicitly describe the service as walk-in.
Follow the instructions provided with the current online application and review the official court website before visiting. Both applicants should bring the required identification and any applicable divorce or death documentation.
Pickens County Courthouse Photography Rules
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office states that the use of cell phones, cameras, and other electronic devices is prohibited inside all courtrooms.
This restriction means couples should not assume that wedding photography will be permitted inside a courtroom. Because Pickens County Probate Court does not perform ceremonies, the safest approach is to plan the ceremony and professional portraits somewhere else.
A separate photography policy for courthouse hallways, lobbies, or exterior areas was not publicly listed on the official website. If courthouse portraits are important to you, plan primarily for outdoor photographs or another location where professional photography is clearly permitted.
Everyone entering the courthouse is also subject to security screening. Large bags and backpacks are prohibited inside courtrooms, so avoid bringing unnecessary equipment into the building during the license visit.
