A chapel venue and a church can both give you a beautiful indoor ceremony. The planning process is where they differ, so it helps to know which one you are booking.
Chapel venues are event spaces with a dedicated ceremony room. They are usually open to any couple, and many offer a reception space, a dressing suite and in-house planning on the same property. You book them the same way you would book any wedding venue.
Churches that host weddings plan each ceremony around their own traditions and guidelines. Depending on the church, that can mean:
Membership. Some churches ask that the couple be registered or active members before scheduling a wedding. Others welcome members and non-members.
Preparation. Many churches, including every Catholic parish in this guide, ask couples to complete marriage preparation or premarital counseling, and to reach out at least six months ahead.
Set ceremony times. Several parishes schedule weddings at specific times on Saturdays.
Photography guidelines. Most churches have guidelines about flash, where photographers may stand, and how much time is available for photos after the ceremony.
None of this is a reason to choose one over the other. It simply helps you plan your timeline, your portrait time and your expectations around the space you love.

According to the venue, it hosts weddings for up to 300 guests, with a private wedding suite where you can get ready before walking down the aisle. The venue is at 260 Peachtree Industrial Blvd in Sugar Hill, northeast of Atlanta.
The Chapel on Sycamore is a historic stone chapel in downtown Decatur, built between 1897 and 1899 and designed by architect G.L. Norrman in the Romanesque style. It was home to Decatur First United Methodist Church for decades, and it still has its Tiffany stained glass window. Its indoor chapel has a grand historic altar and a marble center aisle and seats up to 300 guests. The property also has an outdoor garden gazebo, a fireplace pavilion, a reception hall and lakeside grounds, and the venue offers in-house planning, florals and catering, which is helpful if you want most of your wedding in one place.
Suite Love Chapel (Atlanta)
Suite Love Chapel is an elopement and micro wedding chapel in southwest Atlanta, at 575 Wharton Dr SW. Ceremonies are by appointment, and the chapel’s options range from a marriage license signing for just the two of you to micro weddings with up to 24 guests. Every package includes a licensed officiant, and the chapel offers same-day bookings with an additional fee. It is a lovely fit if you want a meaningful, simple ceremony with only your closest people.

Cathedral of Christ the King (Buckhead)
The Cathedral of Christ the King at 2699 Peachtree Road NE is one of the most striking church ceremony settings in Atlanta, with soaring Gothic arches, deep wood pews and rich stained glass. The cathedral welcomes both parishioners and non-parishioners. According to its marriage page, weddings are scheduled on Saturdays at 12:00, 2:00 and 6:00 p.m., couples complete about six months of marriage preparation, and there are 75 minutes after the ceremony for photos and cleanup. Flash is not used during the ceremony, and photographers work from the choir loft, the side aisles or behind seated guests.
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church (Briarcliff)
Immaculate Heart of Mary is a Catholic parish at 2855 Briarcliff Road NE, near Emory. Its sanctuary, dedicated in 2009, is bright and open, with tall organ pipes behind the altar, and it holds approximately 700 guests. The parish schedules weddings on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., couples complete pre-Cana preparation, and the IHM Wedding Guild coordinates the rehearsal and the wedding day. The parish’s wedding policy covers the details, so we recommend reading it early.
The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany (Lake Claire)
The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany sits at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and East Lake Road, about a mile west of Decatur. Its sanctuary has a warm, peaked wood ceiling and a wood altar wall that frames the couple beautifully. Epiphany asks that one partner be an active, pledging member before scheduling a wedding, and couples meet with the clergy at least six months ahead to plan the date and premarital counseling.
St. Peter Chanel at 11330 Woodstock Road in Roswell has a spacious sanctuary with arched windows, stained glass and a long center aisle that leads the eye straight to the altar. Couples start by sending the parish’s Marriage Inquiry Form, and the parish shares its Wedding Celebration Guidelines, which cover the ceremony and photography details.
The Catholic Church of St. Ann at 4905 Roswell Road in Marietta is a traditional setting for a Catholic ceremony, with tall stained glass windows and a golden altar wall. The parish asks that couples be registered, practicing members for at least six months before beginning marriage preparation, and that they begin the process at least six months before the wedding.
First Baptist Church Marietta is a historic church at 148 Church Street, steps from the Marietta Square. Its stone archways and classic architecture make a beautiful backdrop for bridal portraits, which is how we have photographed it. The church books weddings for members and non-members on a first come, first served basis. Weddings are not scheduled on Sundays, certain holiday weekends or in December, so check the church’s calendar before you settle on a date.
Smyrna First Baptist Church in Cobb County has a large, bright sanctuary with crystal chandeliers, a wide stage for the wedding party and balcony seating that gives a beautiful overhead view of the ceremony. The church’s historic stone chapel is a lovely spot for portraits after the ceremony. Reach out to the church office to ask about wedding availability and guidelines.
St. Oliver Plunkett at 3200 Brooks Dr SW in Snellville has a warm wood ceiling and a tall stained glass window above the altar that glows during a daytime ceremony. To begin, couples call the parish to set up a meeting with a priest and bring the parish’s Marriage Information Form to that first meeting.
If you are open to a short drive, some of the most charming wedding chapels in Georgia are in the North Georgia mountains, where the views outside the windows are part of the ceremony.
Juliette Chapel (Dahlonega)
Juliette Chapel at 497 Highway 52 West in Dahlonega is a bright, intimate chapel with a wood ceiling, wood pews and an eight-foot window behind the ceremony space that looks out into the forest. The chapel and reception building seat up to 70 guests, and the property includes a bride’s dressing room with a private bath and an outdoor patio with café lighting. It is a DIY rental, so you can bring the vendors you love, and the Limelight Inn next door makes it easy for guests to stay close by.
The Tate House is a pink marble mansion built in the 1920s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its Pavilion is a glass-walled ceremony space with white walls and floors and a whitewashed wood ceiling. The floor-to-ceiling windows can open for an open-air feel on a beautiful day or stay closed so the room is climate controlled. The Tate House hosts up to 180 guests for a ceremony. The Pavilion is one of our favorite ceremony spaces on the property, and its soft, bounced light photographs beautifully at nearly any hour.
Chapels and churches are some of the most meaningful places to say your vows, and a little planning helps your photos reflect that.
Ask for the photography guidelines early. Most churches share guidelines about flash, where photographers may stand and whether the altar area is open during the ceremony. Knowing them ahead of time lets us plan angles that keep your ceremony calm and your photos complete.
Plan for low light. Many sanctuaries have a warm, low-light glow that feels beautiful in person. We keep flash to a minimum during ceremonies so it never distracts from the moment, and we rely on full-frame cameras, low-light lenses and constant lights where they are allowed. Protect your portrait time. Some churches have a set window after the ceremony for photos. If yours does, a first look lets you finish many portraits before the ceremony, so the time afterward can go to family photos and a few portraits at the altar.
