Wedding Chapels in Atlanta: Beautiful Chapels and Churches for Your Ceremony

by

Wide view of a wedding Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Atlanta

Wedding chapels in Atlanta range from historic stone sanctuaries and glass-walled chapels in the woods to intimate elopement chapels you can book with just a few guests. Some are part of full-service wedding venues and welcome any couple. Others are parish churches, where the ceremony is part of the life of a congregation and planning follows the church’s own guidelines.

This guide covers both. You will find chapel venues around Atlanta, churches that host weddings in the city and across the metro area, and a few favorites in North Georgia. For each one, we share what makes it special, what to ask before you book, and how the space photographs. We have photographed ceremonies in many of these sanctuaries, and what we have learned there shapes the photo tips near the end.

Chapel or Church: What Couples Should Know

A chapel venue and a church can both give you a beautiful indoor ceremony. The planning process is where they differ, so it helps to know which one you are booking.

Chapel venues are event spaces with a dedicated ceremony room. They are usually open to any couple, and many offer a reception space, a dressing suite and in-house planning on the same property. You book them the same way you would book any wedding venue.

Churches that host weddings plan each ceremony around their own traditions and guidelines. Depending on the church, that can mean:

  • Membership. Some churches ask that the couple be registered or active members before scheduling a wedding. Others welcome members and non-members.
  • Preparation. Many churches, including every Catholic parish in this guide, ask couples to complete marriage preparation or premarital counseling, and to reach out at least six months ahead.
  • Set ceremony times. Several parishes schedule weddings at specific times on Saturdays.
  • Photography guidelines. Most churches have guidelines about flash, where photographers may stand, and how much time is available for photos after the ceremony.

None of this is a reason to choose one over the other. It simply helps you plan your timeline, your portrait time and your expectations around the space you love.

Ashton Gardens (Sugar Hill)

Ashton Gardens, part of Walters Wedding Estates, is known for its signature glass chapel. High arched wooden beams frame floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the surrounding forest, so the room fills with soft natural light during a daytime ceremony. According to the venue, it hosts weddings for up to 300 guests, with a private wedding suite where you can get ready before walking down the aisle. The venue is at 260 Peachtree Industrial Blvd in Sugar Hill, northeast of Atlanta.

The Chapel on Sycamore (Decatur)

The Chapel on Sycamore is a historic stone chapel in downtown Decatur, built between 1897 and 1899 and designed by architect G.L. Norrman in the Romanesque style. It was home to Decatur First United Methodist Church for decades, and it still has its Tiffany stained glass window. Today it is a privately owned event space that is not affiliated with any religion or denomination, which makes it a welcoming choice for couples of any background who love a classic sanctuary. It is at 318 Sycamore Street in Decatur.

Pristine Chapel Lakeside (Jonesboro)

Pristine Chapel Lakeside is a full-service wedding venue about 30 minutes south of Atlanta, at 7541 Mount Zion Blvd in Jonesboro. Its indoor chapel has a grand historic altar and a marble center aisle and seats up to 300 guests. The property also has an outdoor garden gazebo, a fireplace pavilion, a reception hall and lakeside grounds, and the venue offers in-house planning, florals and catering, which is helpful if you want most of your wedding in one place.

Suite Love Chapel (Atlanta)

Suite Love Chapel is an elopement and micro wedding chapel in southwest Atlanta, at 575 Wharton Dr SW. Ceremonies are by appointment, and the chapel’s options range from a marriage license signing for just the two of you to micro weddings with up to 24 guests. Every package includes a licensed officiant, and the chapel offers same-day bookings with an additional fee. It is a lovely fit if you want a meaningful, simple ceremony with only your closest people.

Photo Tips for Chapel and Church Ceremonies

Chapels and churches are some of the most meaningful places to say your vows, and a little planning helps your photos reflect that.

Ceremony at the altar under the pipe organ at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Atlanta
  • Ask for the photography guidelines early. Most churches share guidelines about flash, where photographers may stand and whether the altar area is open during the ceremony. Knowing them ahead of time lets us plan angles that keep your ceremony calm and your photos complete.
  • Plan for low light. Many sanctuaries have a warm, low-light glow that feels beautiful in person. We keep flash to a minimum during ceremonies so it never distracts from the moment, and we rely on full-frame cameras, low-light lenses and constant lights where they are allowed. You can read more about how we photograph in low light.
  • Protect your portrait time. Some churches have a set window after the ceremony for photos. If yours does, a first look lets you finish many portraits before the ceremony, so the time afterward can go to family photos and a few portraits at the altar.
  • Share your priorities with us. Tell us which family groupings and moments matter most, and we will build the timeline around them at our Photography Timeline Planning Meeting, including any lighting needs or church guidelines.
  • Think about the light outside, too. Stone steps, arched doors and garden paths make lovely portrait spots after the ceremony. We add supplemental lighting for portraits whenever it helps keep skin tones true.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between a Wedding Chapel and a Church?

A wedding chapel is usually a dedicated ceremony space that is part of a wedding venue, and most are open to any couple. A church is home to a congregation, so weddings there follow the church’s own traditions, membership guidelines and preparation requirements. Both can be beautiful places to marry.

Do I Need to Be a Member to Get Married at a Church in Atlanta?

It depends on the church. The Cathedral of Christ the King welcomes parishioners and non-parishioners, and First Baptist Church Marietta books weddings for members and non-members. The Catholic Church of St. Ann asks that couples be registered members for at least six months, and The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany asks that one partner be an active, pledging member. Our Lady of the Assumption welcomes couples from outside the parish. Always check with the church directly.

How Far in Advance Should We Book a Wedding Chapel or Church?

Many churches ask couples to reach out at least six months ahead to allow time for marriage preparation. Popular chapel venues and Saturday dates often book well in advance, so contacting your top choices early gives you the most dates to choose from.

Are There Wedding Chapels in Georgia That Offer Same-Day Ceremonies?

Some elopement chapels do. Suite Love Chapel in Atlanta, for example, offers same-day bookings with an additional fee. Remember that you will still need your Georgia marriage license, so plan that step first.

Can Our Photographer Use Flash During a Church Ceremony?

Many churches ask photographers not to use flash during the ceremony, and some limit where photographers can stand. We keep flash to a minimum during every ceremony and use low-light cameras, lenses and constant lights, so your ceremony photos stay clean and natural while the moment stays undisturbed.

What Are Some Wedding Chapels Near Atlanta for a Small Wedding?

Suite Love Chapel hosts elopements and micro weddings for up to 24 guests, and Juliette Chapel in Dahlonega seats up to 70 guests in a bright chapel surrounded by forest. For more ideas, see our guide to small wedding venues.
