Whittier Mill Park photos blend history and nature in a way few Atlanta parks can. Set in the historic Whittier Mill Village in northwest Atlanta, near the Chattahoochee River, the park keeps the tower and remnants of a cotton mill built in 1895, surrounded by open green space and trees. It’s a lesser-known gem for couples who want a unique, historic touch in their engagement photos.
Below you will find a little of the park’s history, the spots we love for photos, and tips for planning your Whittier Mill Park session.

The History of Whittier Mill
Construction on the Whittier cotton mill began in May 1895 and was finished in less than a year, per the City of Atlanta historic district page. Most of the mill buildings were taken down in 1988, but the mill tower still stands, and much of the original worker housing in the surrounding village survives today.

Planning Your Whittier Mill Park Photos
- Check the rules first. Whittier Mill Park may require additional permissions for professional photos, so confirm before your session.
- Plan around the light. Near sunrise or sunset, the light is soft and warm on the brick.
- Pick a comfortable season. Spring, fall and winter are the most comfortable times for outdoor portraits in Atlanta. In summer, we recommend an indoor location.
- Consider a weekday. From Monday through Thursday, popular spots tend to be quieter, and weekday outdoor sessions include complimentary rescheduling for inclement weather, per our weather policy.
- Plan a backup. Weekend sessions happen rain or shine, so pair this spot with an indoor option from our indoor portrait locations guide.
