The preservation group Buckhead Heritage refers to it as the Calhoun-Thornwell Estate, and historic photo records list it as the A.W. Calhoun Residence. All three names point to the same pink Italianate mansion.
Where the Pink Castle Nickname Came From
According to Simply Buckhead’s feature on the Calhoun Estate, the home picked up the “Pink Castle” name from Anne Rivers Siddons’ novel Peachtree Road, a story about wealthy Atlanta families. The name stuck, and it’s still how many people know the house today.
Is the Pink Castle the Same as the Pink Palace?
They’re two different homes, and they’re easy to mix up. The Pink Palace name most often refers to a pink stucco mansion at 541 West Paces Ferry Road, also in Buckhead and also designed by Philip Shutze, as Rough Draft Atlanta reported. Buckhead Heritage notes that the estate was built in 1923 by Hentz, Reid & Adler, drawing inspiration from Italian villas, including Villa Cuzzano near Verona and Villa Gori in Siena. Simply Buckhead adds that Neel Reid made early drawings for the house and Philip Trammell Shutze created the final design. The same article describes three plaster-framed murals inside the home by Allyn Cox, the artist known for his work in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
Philip T. Shutze also designed the illustrious Swan House, located within the Atlanta History Center.
