A Piedmont Room wedding brings together a polished indoor reception and one of Atlanta’s most beloved parks. The room sits upstairs at Park Tavern, with soaring ceilings and tall windows that look out over Piedmont Park and the Midtown skyline, and the park itself is just steps away for portraits.
We have photographed weddings at both the Piedmont Room and the Piedmont Garden Tent next door. Here is what to know about the venue, our favorite photo spots and how to plan your day around the park’s light.
About the Piedmont Room
The Piedmont Room is the upstairs event space at Park Tavern, 500 10th Street NE, at the southeast corner of Piedmont Park where 10th Street meets Monroe Drive. Park Tavern runs both the Piedmont Room and its outdoor sister venue, the Piedmont Garden Tent, so both are privately operated and separate from the event spaces the Piedmont Park Conservancy manages inside the park, like Magnolia Hall, Greystone and Dockside.
The building has a long history. According to Park Tavern, it was built in 1905 as horse stables and became the park’s men’s club and golf clubhouse in 1928, and the Piedmont Room has hosted weddings since 2001. Today the venue describes the room as a blend of classic and contemporary style, with soaring 15-foot ceilings, dark bamboo hardwood floors and expansive windows that frame the park and the Midtown skyline.
According to the venue, the room seats up to 200 guests with a dance floor, or 250 or more for a cocktail-style reception. Gold Chiavari chairs, ivory linens, votive candles and up-lighting come with the rental, and a private entrance and bridal suite give you a place to get ready on site.
Getting Ready and the Details
Having a bridal suite on site keeps the morning simple and the day on schedule. We start with the details, like your gown, rings, shoes and jewelry, while hair and makeup finish, then look for soft window light for portraits as you get dressed.
A First Look by the Windows
The tall windows along the room are one of our favorite spots for a first look. The light is soft and even, the skyline sits right behind you, and you get a private moment together before your guests arrive.
A first look also opens up time for couple portraits, wedding party photos and family photos before the ceremony, so you can spend cocktail hour with your guests. The same windows make a beautiful backdrop for those portraits while the room is quiet.
Portraits in Piedmont Park
One of the best parts of a Piedmont Room wedding is what is right outside. Park Tavern sits at the edge of the park, so a short walk takes us to open lawns and tree-lined paths with the Midtown skyline behind you, and you never have to travel between your venue and your portraits.
We have photographed many weddings and portrait sessions in Piedmont Park. Our guide to Piedmont Park weddings shows more of the park’s skyline views, and our Piedmont Park photography post has even more ideas for portrait spots.
Fun Extras Outside the Room
There is room outside the Piedmont Room for fun extras, like a vintage camper photo booth. Additions like this give your guests something playful to enjoy during cocktail hour, and they make for some of the most lighthearted couple portraits of the day.
We love mixing a few relaxed, candid moments like these in with your classic portraits, so your gallery shows the fun side of your celebration too.
The Ceremony
The venue hosts ceremonies on site, either inside the Piedmont Room or outdoors on the private lawn beside the Piedmont Garden Tent, which the venue calls the Meadow. Inside, gold Chiavari chairs, pastel aisle florals and a floral arch turn the room into an elegant ceremony space.
We photograph the processional, vows and ring exchange from positions that stay out of your guests’ view, and we never use flash during a ceremony. If you plan to hold both the ceremony and reception in the room, ask the venue how the space will be reset between the two, so we can photograph your ceremony setup and your reception decor at their best.
The Reception
Before guests come in, we photograph the room and your decor just as you planned it. Long banquet tables run beautifully down the length of the room, and candlelight against the dark floors and tall windows gives the reception a warm, elegant glow.
Personal touches like your florals, linens, place settings and cake make the room your own, and we photograph them up close so you can remember every detail.
A sweetheart table by the windows puts the skyline right behind the two of you, and it makes a lovely spot for a few portraits during dinner.
Indoor evening receptions need good lighting, so we bring and test our own lighting before your grand entrance. That way your first dance, toasts, cake cutting and time on the dance floor look as polished as your portraits. Learn more in our guide to wedding photography at night.
Timeline Tips for a Piedmont Room Wedding
The Midtown skyline shapes the light in Piedmont Park. The official sunset time assumes a flat, open horizon, while in the city the sun drops behind trees and buildings earlier, often 20 to 45 minutes before the listed time. We plan to finish outdoor portraits about 30 minutes before the official sunset, and late afternoon, well away from the midday sun, usually gives the most flattering light.
Give yourselves a little extra time for park portraits too, since walking between spots and gathering family in a busy public park takes longer than most couples expect. During photography timeline planning, we map out where each part of your day happens and how much time it needs, and our timeline planning guide has sample schedules to help.
